Congratulations! You're getting married!
Congratulations on your recent engagement! The wedding planner has some outstanding ideas for the reception. One is to create a wedding video that is totally unique and different than any kind that has been created before.
Her vision is to have you and your fiance create two separate videos of baby pictures, home videos of you and your family etc. The wedding planner has some serious connections and is going to have Stephen Spielberg put your video together in a love story.
He'll take a separate video made of the reception and wedding and other cool stuff and put the two "growing up" videos into it.
The process will be expensive but it is a chance of a lifetime!! But they need all videos by March 30th.
The families have decided to split the work and the cost. Your part is to provide a video of you in a timeline spanning from your birth to today. You can include videos, pictures, voice-overs, text etc. The video needs to be at least 2 minutes long and be interesting. You can also include interviews with your mom or dad where they tell a story about you when you where growing up. Again, make it interesting.
You have a couple options.
Option 1: Create your own video. Because of your background in Mr Larsen's class you have the skills to create the video yourself. You can save yourself a lot of money that way.

Building the Growling Productions Library
Every business has a handbook that shows incoming employees "how we do things here". We will be developing a library of videos that will be used as a resource for future employees. The videos will show how to use Photoshop, Premiere, and After Effects at Growling Productions.
There are an endless number of tutorials that need to be made. We'll start with the basics. The tools.
Growling Productions will pay for each video submitted. There are two ways to earn money for the videos.
First: You will be paid for every submission that meets the requirements. Read the requirements carefully and submit them to your executive assistant.
Second: There will only be one "official" video for each tool. If your submission is chosen you will receive a substantial bonus.

Education is the Key to success!
The boss at Growling Productions has come to you and talked with you about furthering your education. He made a compelling argument that with specialized training or a degree you'll be able to apply for new positions in the company. That means more money and further opportunities.
You've decided to take his advice and go to school. You've chosen a school. It has a great reputation, has competitive tuition, and it offers a "work/study" program. They will allow you to work at Growling Productions and pay tuition using the money you earn. To help offset the cost of tuition they offer a scholarship that you can spend as you see fit. The money for the scholarship is broken into three components. You'll find the descriptions and scholarship amounts below. Follow the directions carefully, the scholarship committee is very picky!
Letter of application $5,000
The first component is a letter of application. Address the letter to "The Scholarship Committee". This letter should be no longer than 500 words and should talk about your accomplishments during your high school career. write like you have accomplished it. Use your imagination. Your future self is interesting and has accomplished a great deal. Make sure your supervisor proofreads your letter before you submit it to your blog.
(For this scenario, write as the person you will be by the time you graduate. For example, you may not have graduated with a 4.0 GPA yet but it's something you want to do so write it in.)
Video Intro $10,000
The second component is a video introduction. You need to create a video that is no more than 1:30 in length.
Your video intro should include a brief introduction (make sure and say your name). Talk about your accomplishments as your future self. Thank the selection committee for considering your application. You may read your application content but it is better to have the notes off screen or behind the camera. Just remember to smile and make eye contact. Submit your final product on Youtube and on your blog.
Reference Signatures and Statement $10,000
The third component is references. You need to find 3 people that will vouch for your ability to succeed and your dedication to be an outstanding student. Use the following document to gather the signatures and post the document on your blog. Print the image below and use it to gather your signatures.

Drive It Home
You need a car. You have a lot of job opportunities around town but you're finding it difficult to get to them all using the bus system and a bike isn't practical. In an ideal world you would pay cash for your car but in order to work you need to buy one now. Using credit is dumb. So, your option is to barter.
Before you talk to the dealer you want to research the value of the car.
- Find the car on Kelly Blue Book.
- Make sure and document your research on your blog. You can use the snipping tool to capture a screenshot of the value etc.
- Make sure you have the Price, Mileage, the Make and the Model of the car.
You walk into the dealer and find the car you've been looking for. When you meet with the dealer you negotiate a price that is exactly the KBB value.
You explain that you're a starving student and that you're willing to pay by working for the dealer until the car is paid off. You offer your services as an artist and he's in need of some work in that area so he accepts. He lists the services he needs and together you work out the value. The final list is below.
Car Dealer Commissioned Work
1 Minute Commercial - $5,000
This is a high quality car commercial. The dealer has cars on the lot that need to be sold. He'd like you to highlight a car and show people the high quality of the car both inside and out, the easy financing, outstanding warranties, and the great service at the dealership.
30 Second Commercial - $3,000

15 Facebook Overview - $500
The dealer has a Facebook page and wants to put short videos on his page that quickly shows the prospective buyer a car that they click on. The video should include the interior, exterior, engine, tires, etc.
Jingle for the radio - $300
Create an original sound clip that can run on the radio.
“Gears of Joy” T-shirt Design - $500
The dealer is sponsoring a local fundraiser called the "Gears of Joy" walk. It's intended to bring awareness of local homelessness. Design a T-Shirt that will be handed out to the participants.
"Gears of Joy" window sticker - $100

Welcome to Growling Productions!
We are going to spend this semester in a work environment. Growling Productions is a new media business. I am your boss, Mr. Larsen, and you are a new employee.
I am willing to train you because I recognize that I benefit from your increased skills and I also care about your success as my employee. Make sure and ask questions if you have them. However, you shouldn't expect me to be your only resource. Create friendships. Look for answers online and from those around you. Remember, your skills are valuable. Don't give them away to your coworkers lightly.
There's a lot of details to work through so let's get started with Basic Training.
Basic Training
Agreement
Your contract says that you will work in class for the duration of one semester and in return for completing all work I will give you a grade that honestly and fairly reflects your work in class and the benefits you bring to the company.
Your contract says that your grade will be calculated using the United States monetary system of capital exchange. That means that I have money and I am willing to give it to you for your services. The gradebook will reflect your training, completed projects, and mastery of the material. To demonstrate mastery you'll need to work, literally. Before your semester grade is posted you will have the chance to review it and discuss it with me on a number of occasions during your performance evaluations.
Your contract says I own the things you create and you receive money that you may choose to spend as you see fit.
Your contract says you may take one bathroom break a day if needed. Emergencies or special conditions may apply.
Your contract says you may take one bathroom break a day if needed. Emergencies or special conditions may apply.
Details
- As a new employee you'll be paid the minimum wage of $10.00 per hour. To keep things simple we will assume that each day in class is an 8 hour day.
- You will have 4 paid sick/personal days for the semester. These days may be used as you see fit. Any days used in addition to the given sick/personal days will not be paid.
- Your seat in class is prime real estate. You will rent the space. Rent may fluctuate so make sure you are keeping a positive balance in your account and save for emergencies.
- Renting a seat in class comes with the following perks
- There are a variety of ways to earn money. You will be paid an hourly rate but you may earn an unlimited amount of money by completing projects. The value of those projects will vary and will be agreed upon by you and Mr. Larsen. All work must be cleared through Mr. Larsen if you want to be paid for it.
Incentives
Promotions: I want to be clear that this is a work environment. I have the ability to reward workers that I value because they are dependable and are highly skilled. "Promotions" may include added responsibility, additional money, etc. I won't give any salaries.
I also have the right to "fire" workers that waste the company time or resources. "Firing" an employee consists of loss of privileges. Examples include loss of phone privileges, being removed from your computer for the day. Hopefully, these instances are rare.

You have an assignment right around the corner. You need to create a vlog. I'll explain more about that in class.
Telling a great story is a skill you can practice. You need a few tools and resources to do it right. B-Roll is the footage you capture that isn't a part of the storyline that you use later to fill in the gaps in your story.
As you prepare to create your vlog consider the videos below.
Peter McKinnon has some great videos about B-Roll and how to use it. The first one is specifically about B-Roll. The second is about filming yourself.
