Reflection on ROWE.

One of the good thing and bad things about a Results Only Work Environment (ROWE) is freedom.  You are expected to do whatever it takes to get the work done.  No scheduled check-ins.  Just a finished product that is high quality and demonstrates your ability.

Our teleportation project was an opportunity for you to see how you react to freedom.  Did you spend your time well?  Did you think of cool ways to complete the project or did you just rush to get finished so you could play?

Understanding how you deal with freedom on assignments can give you some great insight into how you can improve your problem solving skills and your work ethic.

Big Idea #1 : Making good decisions when you have freedom is a learned skill.
Making plans to use your time effectively, being a good researcher, finding joy in work, and being persistent are just a few of the very valuable skills that you can improve at.  You may not be good at all of those things right now.  Most people aren't.  But, with practice, you can develop those skills.   We'll talk about the skills you need to learn to be a good problem solver in the next few weeks.

Big Idea #2 : Real happiness can only be found by overcoming challenges.
For this big idea you'll need to change your mindset.  We don't want to work to avoid challenges.  We need to seek them out.  It keeps us sharp and healthy.  The skills that you need to be successful are the same in many different environments.   Finding challenging experiences and overcoming them can be one of the most rewarding experiences you've ever had.  People that are happy are ones that learn to overcome challenges.  They don't let the challenges they face break them down.

Big Idea #3 : Take control of yourself.  No excuses.
The truth is - nobody can force you to do, or feel a certain way.  The first thing you have to do before you can truly be independent is to stop making excuses for the things you lack in.  Successful people aren't victims.  They are able to evaluate themselves honestly and improve on their weaknesses.  Having a "growth" mindset is a skill we will talk about over the next few weeks.

Your assignment:
Reflect on your experience with the teleport assignment and how you handled the challenge of the ROWE.  Answer the questions below on your blog.
1.  Did you plan before you started the project?
2.  Did you research how to do what you were going to do?
3.  What was your biggest challenge that you overcame?
4.  Was there a part of the assignment that you avoided or didn't do?  What was it and why?
